HOW TO SKIN PREP BEFORE GETTING GLAM

Updated: Oct 3, 2023

So you just booked your appointment, you’re so freaking excited scrolling on every major makeup artist’s feed for inspiration, products and hacks. But what you don’t see is all the religious skincare that happens well before the makeup goes on. I will do my best to explain this hopefully without it being too overwhelming...

Keep in mind, this is just a general skincare routine. Seeing an esthetician is best for a customized skincare regimen that is suited for your skin. And getting frequent facials will have you looking your absolute BEST for the big day!

Now I probably sound like a broken record if you already follow me. But it's true! Having skin that you show love to will set the tone for your makeup. These are the exact things I really wish all of my clients did before coming to their appointment.

Cleanse:

Make sure your face is clean of any debris. If you are a makeup wearer, always double cleanse!

Exfoliate:

THIS PART IS CRUCIAL. Starting with clean skin, the next step would be to exfoliate for a smooth finish. There are two types of exfoliating methods you can do at home, chemical or physical. I personally like both, but you want to be careful not to over exfoliate. Be gentle, you don't want to damage your skin's barrier.

Lip exfoliating/hydrate:

Make sure you get the dead skin off of your lips. The lips are also very sensitive so be sure to be extra gentle! Follow up with something super hydrating like the Leniege Lip Sleeping Mask.

Toner:

Toners are designed to restore the PH balance in your skin. This basically means that you have now washed away the "good" oils your skin naturally produces. Now you need to restore it. I absolutely love toner.

Serums/Treatments:

Serums are going to be the most potent product in your routine. Try to find one that is designed to target your main skin concerns.

Eye Cream:

Hydrate, hydrate, HYDRATE! The eye area is extremely sensitive, show it some love.

Moisturizer:

You absolutely need to moisturize to lock in all the other layers! Think of it as the roof of your home. It protects you!

Sunscreen:

Wear and reapply your sunscreen. **If you're getting make-up done, having spf 20 or higher may cause flashback if you're are having photos taken.

Why does skin prep matter so much if make-up should be able to cover my flaws?

Truth is, Makeup can’t cover texture! Makeup can only get you so far when it comes to texture...it will STILL be there. This is actually where the term CAKEY makeup stems from. It’s actually sitting on dead skin cells.

Lastly, reminding you that no one is perfect so don't be hard on yourself. We ALL get those face demons. It’s NORMAL. The goal here is to keep your skin at it's healthiest it can be whether or not you have acne prone skin or a few blemishes.

Having good skin hygiene is the ultimate step for having a successful glam sesh!
